We’ve had a lot of people ask how the four of us could afford to travel for so long this summer… I traveled quite a bit a few years ago, and I learned that I didn’t need to spend a bunch of money to have a great experience. In many of the SE Asian countries I stayed in I paid $2/night hostels, ate local food, and lived very comfortably for $15-20/day.
It was my goal going into this trip that we keep the cost low so we can plan similar adventures in years to come on our very modest income.
I will update each section of this post periodically with the actual costs compared to our budget. It will be interesting to see how closely we can stick to our budget goals!
Our Overall Budget
|”Being Homeless” Credits||-$7100|
|Flights around the world||$3116|
|Cost of Paris (3 days)||$900|
|Cost of Prague & Poland (7 days)||$1120|
|Cost of Dubai (3 days)||$1185|
|Cost of Thailand (~25 days)||$1750|
|Cost of Taiwan (~5 days)||$720|
|Total cost of trip||$1691|
”Being Homeless” Credits
The most important part of reducing the cost of our trip, this time around, is being homeless for two months. Emily was able to get out of her lease right before our trip which saved both rent and utilities. I know our food budget below ($900/mo) sounds crazy, but my food budget of $300/mo was separate from Emily’s $600/mo (hey teenagers EAT). Our food budget will be less when we move into our house in Laporte in August.
So in the end, we will save $7100 by not living in Fort Collins for June and July and reducing our monthly budget in 2017 by $150/mo.
|Savings in Rent||2||$1100||$2200|
|Savings in Utilities||2||$150||$300|
|Savings on Vehicles||2||$200||$400|
|Savings on Gym||2||$100||$200|
|Savings on Food||2||$900||$1800|
|Savings in Misc||2||$800||$1600|
|Kennel for Jack & Shadow||2||-$600||-$1200|
|Reduce in budget 2017||12||$150||$1800|
Some of the flights we found just fell into our lap and were easy. For example, I searched for USA to Paris for June 13, and when it said $150 from Boston, we immediately bought them! The Dubai to Bangkok flights was more difficult and I searched for weeks trying to make it less expensive. This being our first big trip, we spent a little extra to get direct flights or minimal layovers, but if you are trying to do the absolute cheapest, you could easily drop these flight costs significantly. In a future blog post I’ll share how I find such cheap flights!
|Boston to Paris||$150|
|Paris to Prague||$88|
|Poland to Dubai||$50|
|Dubai to Bangkok||$380|
|Thailand to Taiwan||TBD (approx $100)|
|Taiwan to Denver||$11 + 37,500 points|
|Total per person||$779 + 37,500 points|
Josiah’s location of choice was Paris, and so we’ll be flying into Paris and staying in a nice Airbnb. I actually think our fun and food costs will be less than we budgeted, but we’ll see!
|Daily lodging||3 nights||$120||$360|
|Daily fun & food||3 days||$180||$540|
|Total cost of Paris||$300||$900|
We have only booked 3 nights in Prague so far and we’re leaving the remaining 4 days open on whether we stay or continue to Poland. Poland will most likely be less expensive than Prague.
|Daily lodging||7 nights||$60||$420|
|Daily fun & food||7 days||$100||$700|
|Total cost of Prague/Poland||$160||$1120|
Ethan’s location of choice was Dubai. There were much less expensive lodging options in Dubai but we thought it was important to stay right in the middle of it all! Plus, our first night at our hotel includes 4 free water park tickets to Wild Wadi!
|Daily lodging||3 nights||$195||$585|
|Daily fun & food||3 days||$200||$600|
|Total cost of Dubai||$395||$1185|
Finally, the “budget” part of the trip! We have 31 days split between Thailand and Taiwan. We’ll spend less time on admission tickets and more enjoying the culture and meeting people!
|Daily lodging||25 nights||$20||$500|
|Daily fun & food||25 days||$50||$1250|
|Total cost of Thailand||$70||$1750|
Our flight home flies out of Taipei so we plan on spending some time checking out Taiwan. Everything we’ve seen so far makes Taiwan out to be an amazing country!
|Daily lodging||6 nights||$40||$240|
|Daily fun & food||6 days||$80||$480|
|Total cost of Taiwan||$120||$720|
